QUESTION:  I have significant debt, but am not sure that I want to file
for bankruptcy, what are my options?

ANSWER:  Our office always recommends consulting with one of our
attorneys before making a decision on whether or not bankruptcy is an
appropriate way to handle your debt.  Other options that will be
discussed at our consultation include enrollment in consumer credit
counseling, refinancing your home to reduce your monthly payments,
loans from your pension plan, debt settlement plans, and whether or
not you are simply judgment proof, since your income is from a source
that can not be garnished by creditors.  Whatever you do, please do
not refinance your home to eliminate debt, if you are still going to be
unable to pay your bills, since you are then putting your house at risk,
since the unsecured debt could have been discharged in a bankruptcy.

The following links and articles are some that we thought might be
useful when you are examining your options on how to reduce or
eliminate your debts, which will ultimately allow you more financial
freedom in the future.
